Distro Kid Upload to Youtube How Long

Today is a big twenty-four hour period. As you guys know, I've tested all the music streaming distribution sites and have consistently ranked CDBaby as the best one, specifically for up-and-coming artists.

I finally got around to testing out Distrokid and have been using it for the terminal three months (on 3 releases) and in this post will share with you lot the pros and cons of Distrokid.

Volition DistroKid knock CD Babe off its music distribution throne? Let's go into the skilful, bad and ugly…

Bad Things Virtually DistroKid: Bad and Ugly

There actually ain't some other style to put it: It'due south definitely the ugliest of the agglomeration.

The vibe I get from the site is it it'south a 1-human operation and that one human being is either purposefully making the site look bad (to brand us call back he's passing on the savings to us) or just completely ignoring bones blueprint principles.

For instance, this is the upload page:

distrokid upload page

Yikes! At present here'due south what happens when you click "Team".

I hope y'all're sitting down for this.

Are you still live? I know, I know, everything is just plain bad.

It's so bad, I most didn't want to sign up but then I saw that Derrik Sivers the founder of CD Baby, is recommending the site.

And since I appreciate Derrik's mode of thinking, I was like "ah what the heck! Let's requite this a shot!".

I wish DistroKid either doubles down on bad design or but does the web two.0 fashion that's been in vogue for the concluding 10 years (*cough* merely copy Tunecore).

This half-ass job, makes me feel like they're going to run to the Caymans with my $48 in streaming revenue!

Upselling Me into Oblivion

I know trying to upsell your customers is the snazzy thing to do in eCommerce, but information technology'due south not cool and doesn't feel homo.

Especially when all your customers are musicians: our whole affair is trying to feel more than man!

I mean, every song nosotros brand is trying to bring some god damn humanity into this common cold wired world, and you're doing this to me:

This doesn't make me feel more human! Can't you lot just include this for gratis? And what happens when Distrokid dies?

Song Landing Page

It's nice that they provide this characteristic and if you don't know what it is, it's just a landing page that has links to all the streaming services your song is on (Spotify, Apple Music, Google Play, Deezer, etc).

Just it looks so ugly, there's no mode any artist should be sharing that with their fans. In fact, someday I find a new artist and see their link in bio is to Distrokid, I brace myself.

There's also a little button at the acme that says "Talk to me", which fans are supposed to utilise to message the artist. This is a useless distraction as it takes away from the users' flow (to listen to the song!).

For independent artists, the song landing page, I like the most is the one from ToneDen.

It'due south the one with the link which will commonly start with fanlink.to.

It'south gratuitous to use and looks much better than the ane Distrokid provides.

The Matter Well-nigh Almanac Fees

This isn't a bad thing but could be a bad matter if you make it a bad affair: why are you making it a bad thing?

For artists who release one song every x years, paying an annual fee is not a good idea (obviously) and you'll want to stick with CDBaby.

Just for the rest of us who churn out songs weekly, Distrokid's interests align not only with our interests merely also with Spotify'south.

Yous see there is reason to believe that Spotify's algorithm rewards musicians who release music on a consistent and frequent basis.

This is why I recommend every artist, from major to mini, drib a song one time a month (at the very least) and you'll see in the side by side paragraph how Distrokid makes this economical.

The Good Things About DistroKid!

While the design of the site makes me feel like they don't give a hoot nearly me, the bodily services Distrokid offers tells me they are legit and 100% for contained musicians.

Let's beginning with the biggest benefit: pricing.

And this is something you better be sitting down for.

For only $20 a year, y'all can upload UNLIMITED songs to Spotify, Apple Music, and the whole streaming services cartel.

$20 a year!

Upload equally many songs as you can make!

With CDBaby and Tunecore, they normally charge near $10 per song. I don't get how they're going to compete with this, crusade pretty websites ain't going to cut it.

Oh, and did I mention you keep 100% of your royalties.

I know this is sounding similar an infomercial correct now. But in my CD Baby vs Tunecore review, y'all can see exactly how much royalties they snip away from you.

And it's a lot higher than 0%.

We musicians should treat our royalties like one-time men care for their backyard: get your damn self off my lawn!

Another matter Distrokid doesn't charge is for the UPC code, they just requite it to you for free, which has e'er felt like a scam the other sites charged for.

Tik Tok Integration

Another do good, which I presume CD Baby et all, will do is uploading your songs to TikTok.

If you haven't heard of TikTok or don't intendance, download the app and put 100% of your social media content cosmos into it (especially if you lot are a musician) because there's a practiced chance you'll get viral on your third mail.

For me, I wanted my songs to become on TikTok so I could practise featherbrained videos to them and Distrokid is the but i offering that service (and if others are they're not credible).

Distribution Speed

With CD Infant, information technology would take two weeks to get a vocal on Spotify and with Distrokid, my songs were getting on within 1-3 days. This isn't necessarily a skillful matter anymore, as to become on Spotify'southward playlists they recommend submitting the vocal two weeks before release.

I'd recommend submitting it even earlier, which means setting your release date three to four weeks in advance.

Withdrawing Earnings (Update: 2021)

Since I wrote this article, some people in the comments have mentioned they have had problem withdrawing their earnings and I plant that a picayune troubling. So what did I exercise? I withdrew my earnings from Distrokid to get an thought of the process. I had over $2000 USD to withdraw from Distrokid and information technology transferred without any problems. I also alive in Canada then had to make full out the necessary forms (W8) and Distrokid and their payment partner Tipalti fabricated it easy to exercise so.

The only affair that is a little frustrating and this isn't a knock confronting Distrokid but ane against the streaming services, is why does it have so long to summate and send our royalties? In almost cases, it'south at least a 2-month wait. Don't computers practise all the accounting? Why are you sitting on our money for months? LOL. But I digress.

Bonus Tips

Now it should exist pretty clear I recommend Distrokid over CD Babe, so here are some bonus tips to help you brand the transition.

1) Get the $xix.99 plan, instead of the cheaper $9.99 plan, because you tin can't choose your release engagement.

This is of import for iii reasons (and yes I fabricated all these mistakes, and so you don't have to):

(A) Y'all take no idea when your music will be released on all streaming sites as each streaming service has different processing times. And then if you tell your fans your song will be out Fri, it might not exist out on Apple Music until the following Monday.

(B) You won't exist able to submit to Spotify's playlist as Spotify's editors won't have time to review it. And you lot at least desire to try to become on a Spotify playlist, fifty-fifty though the chances are 0.02%.

(C) Y'all can't set up your tape characterization name, so on your release it'll say something ugly like "Distrokid 1872047202".

2) If you've found anything I've said today helpful, use my VIP LINK to sign upwardly for Distrokid. Yous'll become seven% off your membership and I'll get a small commission from Distrokid.

Have y'all made the switch to Distrokid? Permit me know in the comments what your experience has been with them.
